How to Tell Which Version of Internet Explorer I'm Running

By Jay Leon

A new version of Windows Internet Explorer comes out every couple of years. The most recent stable version as of October 2010 was Internet Explorer 8 which ships with Windows 7 and is compatible with several other Windows editions. Check what version of the Web browser you have before you install add-ons. Many add-ons require a specific version of Internet Explorer to run correctly. Knowing what release you have is also important if you are a Web designer and you need to test a website on different browsers.

Step 1

Click the "Start" menu button, click "All Programs" and then click "Internet Explorer." Or click the "E" icon on the taskbar.

Step 2

Click the "Help" menu when Internet Explorer opens.

Step 3

Click "About Internet Explorer" from the "Help" menu. A box will appear displaying the current version of the Web browser you are running. You can also see other information such as updates and the product's unique identification number.
