How to Tell Which Version of Java Is Running on My Computer

Java is a programming language that has become very common with the dawn of the Internet. Java is available as JDK (Java Development Kit) or JRE (Java Runtime Environment). JDK is for software developers to create Java based programs. JRE is an implementation of the Java Virtual Machine which actually executes Java programs. If you want to know what version of Java is running on your computer, you could find out in a few steps.

Step 1

then you can find out what version you are running by navigating to the "Start" menu and selecting "Run."

Step 2

In the Run dialog, type "cmd" (without quotes) and click "OK." The Command Prompt dialog opens.

Step 3

Type "java -version" (without quotes), making sure to type a space between "java" and the dash. This will indicate the Java virtual machine model.
