How to Test USB Speed

By Ricky Gee

If you want to check the speed of your USB ports, you will have to connect a USB device such as a jump drive or external hard drive. After a device is connected, you can use the freeware program USBDeview to give you your USB read and write speeds--as well as information about the device that you are using. After testing you can compare your speed to those of others by submitting it to NirSoft--the developer of USBDeview.

Things You'll Need

  • USBDeview software
  • 100 MB of free disk space

Step 1

Go to NirSoft's website and download and install the USBDeview software.

Step 2

Close all software and make sure you are not using any USB devices.

Step 3

Connect the USB device that you would like to test with.

Step 4

Open the USBDeview software.

Step 5

Find your USB device listed in USBDeview and right-click it. Select "SpeedTest."

Step 6

Click the "Start Test" button in the SpeedTest window.
