How to Track Teens Via Cell Phones

By Kristy Pruitt

Keeping track of teenagers has never been easy. But with the addition of GPS technology to most cellular phones, it has become somewhat less difficult. A number of companies have begun to offer services that utilize GPS to pinpoint a cell phone's location, and for a low monthly fee parents can track their teens' phones online. This can provide peace of mind in the event of a missed curfew and make it easier to provide assistance in case of an emergency.

Step 1

Inform your teen of your intentions, and let him know that it is for his own safety. Discuss under what circumstances you will track her location, and make sure she understands the importance of leaving the phone on so that it can be tracked.

Step 2

Select a phone that is equipped with GPS. Your cellular provider can help you find one, or you can check the website of the desired phone's manufacturer to see if it has the technology.

Step 3

Discuss tracking options with your cellular service provider. Most larger providers work with one or more tracking providers, but you will normally have to sign up for tracking service separately.

Step 4

Choose a tracking service provider and sign up with it. Install any necessary software on your teen's phone.

Step 5

Make sure the phone is turned on and attempt to track it online, following your service provider's instructions. If you are unable to track the phone, contact the provider to find out what the problem is.

Tips & Warnings
