How to Transfer a Blackberry MemoPad

By Ruri Ranbe

BlackBerry Desktop Software creates a connection between your BlackBerry device and your computer. With BDS, you can sync content -- such as memos -- from your smartphone with the Outlook profile on your PC, or back up files on an old BlackBerry and transfer the data to a new device. If you're moving data from one BlackBerry to another, you can also copy app configuration, like your MemoPad settings.

From Your BlackBerry to Your PC

Step 1

Download and install BlackBerry Desktop Software (link in Resources) to your computer.

Step 2

Connect your BlackBerry device to your PC and then open BDS if the application doesn't open automatically.

Step 3

Select "Organizer" from the menu on the left and then click "Configure" next to Memos.

Step 4

Set "Sync Direction" to "One Way to Your Computer Only" and then select "Replace All Entries on Your Computer with the Entries on Your Device," if preferred.

Step 5

Set "Memos Account" to "Microsoft Outlook." If you use more than one profile in MS Outlook, click "Configure," choose your account from "Outlook Profile" and then click "Close."

Step 6

Click "OK" to apply your changes. Check "Memos" and then click "Sync Organizer" to copy your data to your computer.

Step 2

Connect your old BlackBerry device to your PC and then open BDS if the application doesn't open automatically.

Click "Back Up Now" and then set "Backup Type" to "Custom (Selected Data Only)."

Step 4

Enter a name for the backup into the "File Name" field or use the default label.

Step 5

Choose a location where you wish to save the backup or use the default file path and then click "Back Up."

Step 6

Choose "Memos" and "MemoPad Options" under Data Type in the Back Up Options dialog.

Step 7

Click "Back Up" again to confirm. Disconnect your device when the backup completes and then connect your new BlackBerry device.

Step 8

Select "Device" from the menu bar and then click "Restore." Choose from the list the backup you just created. If you don't see your backup, click "Change Folder" and navigate to the location where the backup is stored.

Step 9

Choose "All Device Data and Settings" from under Select Data to Restore, and then click "Restore" to copy over your memos and settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use Organizer in BDS to transfer memos across BlackBerry devices. Just set "Sync Direction" to "One Way to Your Device Only" after you've imported the memos to your computer. However, if MS Outlook contains memos other than those you created on your BlackBerry, they are transferred to your new device as well.
  • If you want to transfer a memo to another type of smartphone or a BlackBerry 10 device, use the Email app. Open MemoPad, select the memo you want to transfer and then press the "Menu" key on your device. Select "Forward," then "Email." Type your email address into the "To" field, press "Menu" and then select "Send."
  • Information in this article applies to devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier. It may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products.
  • The BlackBerry 10 OS uses the Remember app, not MemoPad, to create notes. You cannot use BlackBerry Desktop Software to transfer these notes to your PC.
