How to Transfer an iPhoto to an External Hard Drive

By Christopher Kennedy

iPhoto is a program created by Apple allows users to organize, edit, and share their photos seamlessly with other Apple applications. iPhoto is apart of the iLife suite of programs that comes preinstalled on Mac computers. Like other iLife programs, iPhoto can take up extensive amounts of space as its library grows. Storing your iPhoto library on an external hard drive can alleviate this problem.

Step 1

Plug in the external hard drive you are transferring iPhoto to.

Step 2

Open your Pictures folder and drag iPhoto to the external hard drive icon located on your desktop.

Step 3

Quit iPhoto if it is running. For iPhoto '06 and '08, press the "Option" key and click on iPhoto in your dock. Click Choose Library from the prompt and navigate to the external hard drive and select the iPhoto library.

Step 4

Navigate to your Pictures folder and rename the iPhoto library.

Step 5

Open iPhoto and select "iPhoto Library" from the window prompt. Do not select the library you just renamed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before opening iPhoto, you must make sure the external hard drive is connected.
