How to Transfer Data From an Old Windows XP PC to a New One With Windows 7

Microsoft released Windows 7 in 2009. Windows 7 includes the ability to transfer data from both Windows XP and Windows Vista. The data transfer includes user accounts and their associated personal files and settings. You can transfer personal data from a computer with Windows XP installed to one with Windows 7 by using the Windows Easy Transfer utility provided by Microsoft.

Back Up XP

Step 1

Download, install and run the Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP provided by Microsoft.

Step 2

Click the "Next" button, then "An external hard drive or USB flash drive."

Step 3

Click "This is my old computer."

Step 4

Click the check box next to each user account to be transferred. All user accounts are selected by default.

Step 5

Enter a password to protect the transfer file. Click "Save."

Step 6

Choose a location to save the transfer file, such as an external hard disk, and click the "Save" button.

Step 7

Click "Next." Click "Next" again, then "Close."

Transfer to the Windows 7 Computer

Step 1

Locate the saved transfer file on the Windows 7 computer using Windows Explorer.

Step 2

Double-click the transfer file.

Step 3

Click the "Transfer" button.

Step 4

Click the "Close" button and restart the computer after the data have finished transferring.
