How to Transfer Hi8 or 8mm to a DVD or PC

By Stephen A. Powell

Hi8 is an analog 8mm cine film commonly used in camcorders. Other forms of 8mm film, such as Video8, Super 8 and even Digital8, can be used in camcorders and other types of video cameras. While these formats may be perfect for quick capture and playback, you may wish to transfer them to a more accessible digital format, such as DVD or a file on your PC. Connect your camcorder or 8mm film player to either a DVD recorder or TV tuner to transfer the analog content to the digital format of your choosing.

Things You'll Need

  • A/V or RCA cable
  • DVD recorder or TV tuner
  • DVD writer drive (optional)
  • Blank writable DVD (optional)

DVD Transfer

Step 1

Load your Hi8 or other 8mm film into its camcorder, camera or player. Cue the film to its desired point of playback.

Step 2

Connect the Hi8 or other 8mm film player to your DVD recorder. Insert one end of an RCA cable into the player's color-coded RCA "Video Out" or "Line Out" port. Insert the other end of the cable into the DVD recorder's "Video In" or "Line In" port.

Step 3

Insert a blank writable into the DVD recorder. Push the "Open/Close" button to launch the recorder's disc tray. Load the blank writable disc into the tray. Push the "Open/Close" button again to close the tray.

Step 4

Push the "Record" button on the DVD recorder.

Step 5

Push "Play" on the Hi8 or other 8mm player immediately. Doing so minimizes blank space at the beginning of the DVD recording.

Step 6

Push "Stop" on the DVD recorder when the Hi8 or other 8mm video playback has completed. Doing so completes the video's transfer to DVD.

PC Transfer

Step 1

Load your Hi8 or other 8mm film into its camcorder, camera or player. Cue the film to its desired point of playback.

Step 2

Connect the Hi8 or other 8mm film player to your computer's TV tuner. Insert one end an RCA cable into the player's color-coded RCA "Video Out" or "Line Out" port. Insert the other end of the cable into the TV Tuner's "Video In" or "Line In" port.

Step 3

Launch the TV tuner's utility and push "Record" on its control interface.

Step 4

Push "Play" on the Hi8 or other 8mm film player immediately to avoid blank space at the beginning of the TV tuner's digital recording.

Step 5

Push "Stop" on the TV tuner's control interface when the Hi8 or other 8mm video has completed.

Step 6

Save the new digital recording of your Hi8 or other 8mm file. Doing so completes the Hi8 or other 8mm film's transfer to your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save your TV tuner recording in a digital file format that is compatible with your DVD writer utility, if applicable. Provided your computer has a DVD writer drive, doing so allows you to burn the file to DVD at a later time if you so choose.
