How to Transfer Old Email Accounts to New Accounts

By Maya Austen

There are many reasons why you might want to set up a new email account -- an overload of spam, for example. Whatever the reason, you now want to transfer the messages and contacts saved in your old email account to your new one. Accomplishing this task is not as big of a hassle as it might seem. Google’s Gmail service features a built-in migration tool to help users with this transfer, while many other ISP’s use a third-party service called TrueSwitch.

Transfer Using TrueSwitch Migration Tool

Step 1

Sign up for a new account with the webmail service providers of your choice. Some examples are Gmail, Yahoo! Plus email, Windows Live / Hotmail, AOL, Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, Cablevision, Charter, Cox, Earthlink, Time Warner, GMX, Juno or PeoplePC.

Step 2

Go to the secure TrueSwitch Web page for the webmail service provider you wish to transfer your old email account to (see Resources). For example, if you wish to transfer information from your old AOL account to a new Hotmail or Windows Live account, go to the TrueSwitch for Hotmail Web page. You may also use the secure generic “Esaya” TrueSwitch migration tool. The “Esaya” TrueSwitch tools works with any of the listed email service providers.

Step 3

Follow the on-screen instructions to migrate your email messages and address book contacts from your old email account to your new email account. This process will not erase the messages and contacts from your old email account; it simply sends a copy of this content to the new email account. You’ll also be presented with the option to automatically notify everyone in your address book about your new email address.

Step 4

Cancel your old email account.
