How to Transfer Photos to SD Memory Cards

By Kathryn Hatter

Electronics users who regularly save data on their gadgets often use Secure Digital (SD) cards to save this data. Many people enjoy the convenience and ease with which they can save and transfer data between devices using an SD card. For example, you can transfer photos to SD memory cards from your computer. You can then insert the SD card into another computer or electronic device and transfer the photos from the SD card to the other devices.

Step 1

Insert the SD memory card into the SD slot on your computer. Insert the card until it clicks---if the card will not slide easily, do not force it in. Remove it and check the way you are inserting it. Reinsert the card until it slides in easily and clicks.

Step 2

Wait while your computer detects the SD card.

Step 3

Navigate to the location where you store the photos on your computer. Select the photos you wish to transfer by highlighting them. To highlight more than one photo at one time, press the "Control" button as you click on each photo.

Step 4

Right-click on the highlighted photos and select "Send To" from the window of options that appears. Select the removable disk that represents the SD card.

Step 5

Wait while the photos transfer to the SD card.

Step 6

Remove the SD card by clicking the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon found in the taskbar at the bottom right of the desktop. Remove the SD card when you see a message saying it is safe to remove it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternatively, transfer photos to the SD card by dragging them to the card. Open "Computer" and double-click on the removable disk that represents the SD card to open it. While the SD card is open, open the folders where the photos are located and drag the photos to the SD card manually. They will transfer as you drag them.
