How to Transfer Pictures From One SD Card to Another

By Catherine Hewson

Secure Digital (SD) cards are flash memory cards that enable users to store data, such as pictures. Even though the storage capacity of SD cards is rapidly increasing, some users find it necessary to transfer pictures from a smaller SD card to a bigger SD card as a backup or for other purposes. Transferring pictures in this manner requires a computer with a built-in SD card reader.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with SD card reader

Step 1

Insert the SD card you want to transfer pictures from into your computer's SD card reader slot.

Step 2

Click "Start" then "Computer."

Step 3

Right-click the "Removable Disk" icon for your SD card. Click "Copy."

Step 4

Right-click an open area on your desktop and select "Paste." Wait for the "Copying" dialog box to disappear and then remove the SD card from the SD card slot. The files from your first SD card will be in a folder on your Desktop called "Removable Disk."

Step 5

Insert the other SD card into your computer's SD card slot.

Step 6

Right-click the "Removable Disk" folder on your desktop and select "Copy."
