How to Turn Off Compatibility Mode in Word 2007

By Amy Dombrower

Compatibility Mode is turned on when you open a Microsoft Word document in Word 2007 that was created in a previous version of Word or saved as a Word 97-2003 document. The mode is useful when you are sending a document to someone who owns an older version of Word, as it allows him to open the document and edit as needed. Turn off Compatibility Mode if you are solely using Word 2007 to open the document.

Step 1

Open a Microsoft Word document that was saved in a previous format of Word.

Step 2

Click the "Microsoft Office" button in the top left corner of your screen.

Step 3

Click "Convert." Click "OK" in the dialog box that appears. This converts the file to Word 2007 format.

Step 4

Click the "Microsoft Office" button, then choose "Save" to save the file in Word 2007 format. Click "Save as" instead if you want to save the revised format as a separate document from the original.
