How to Turn off MS Security Essentials

By Thomas King

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-malware program created by Microsoft for use with the Windows operating system. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to prevent malware, including Trojans, spyware, viruses and keyloggers, from infecting your computer system. Although Microsoft Security Essentials can help keep your computer safe and running smoothly, it also takes up valuable resources and may slow your boot time. Thus, you may want to turn off Microsoft Security Essentials.

Step 1

Click "Start" and "Microsoft Security Essentials." The Microsoft Security Essentials program opens.

Step 2

Click the "Settings" tab and click "Real-time Protection" in the left pane.

Step 3

Uncheck the "Turn on Real-time Protection (Recommended)" box.

Step 4

Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • Turning off Microsoft Security Essentials means that your computer is not protected against malicious programs, provided you do not have another security program that is enabled. This can result in serious harm, including loss of personal information and reduced system performance.
