How to Turn Off the Paragraph Symbol in Word

By Danielle Cort

Formatting symbols are useful if you're composing a Word document with complex styles or formatting. The paragraph formatting symbol helps you see where paragraphs end. However, seeing too many of these can become distracting. You can hide the paragraph symbol for any given document; you can also turn off formatting symbols if Word is set to display them by default.

In a Document

Step 1

Launch Word.

Step 2

Select the "File" tab on the ribbon, then click "Open" and double-click the document you want to load. A document with paragraph formatting symbols enabled displays the paragraph symbol at the end of each line with a hard return.

Step 3

Click "Home" on the ribbon, then click the paragraph symbol button in the "Paragraph" group to turn off the paragraph symbol.

In the Program

Step 1

Open the Word document with paragraph symbols.

Step 2

Click "File" on the ribbon.

Step 3

Select "Help" from the menu and click "Options" to open a menu of Word options.

Step 4

Click "Display." Uncheck the "Paragraph marks" box. Click "OK" to close the window and turn off the paragraph symbols.
