How to Type Text on a PDF

By Paul Lin

The basic PDF reader simply can not perform the tasks required to edit and modify a PDF file. When a person exports a document as a PDF file, the text and images are locked, making it impossible for the recipient to edit any part of the document without the proper software. In order to edit or add new text to a PDF file, you must obtain a PDF editing program such as Nitro PDF Professional, Foxit PDF Editor or PDFescape.

Step 1

Download and install a PDF-editing software. Nitro PDF Professional and Foxit PDF Editor allow a free 14-day trial version of the software while PDFescape is freeware.

Step 2

Launch the program. Load the document you want to modify by clicking on the "File" tab located on the top toolbar and selecting the "Open" option from the drop-down menu. Find the PDF file and click "OK" to open.

Step 3

Click on the "Insert and Edit" tab if you are working with Nitro PDF Professional. If you are working with PDFescape, click on the "Insert" tab and choose the "Text" option from the drop-down menu. For the Foxit PDF Editor program, click on the "Edit" tab located across the top of the window and select the "Text" option from the drop-down menu.

Step 4

Left-click on the spot where you want to add text and type.

Step 5

Modify existing text by highlighting the text you wish to overwrite, pressing delete and typing your new text.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to save your document periodically by clicking on the "File" button and selecting the "Save" or "Save as" option in the drop-down menu.
