How to Uninstall McAfee Security Center

Sometimes a firewall program can cause problems with your computer. If you must uninstall McAfee Security Center, with or without a reinstall, follow these steps.

Step 1

Access McAfee's files in your program files folder in Explorer. Look for C:\program files\\agent\app.

Step 2

Delete all files contained in the folder. If you can't find the McAfee application, enter "mcafee" in the Search feature on your Explorer toolbar.

Step 3

Go to the "Add and Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Highlight "McAfee Security Center" and click on "Remove."

Step 4

Close down all running programs and restart your computer. The computer will reboot and run a systems check.

Step 5

If you want to reinstall the McAfee Security Center, insert the CD and follow the instructions. If after that you're still encountering problems, run "services.msc" on the Run command. Set the properties on all McAfee services to "Disabled" and set the recovery to "None."

Step 6

Reboot the computer and remove the program with "Add and Remove Programs" as described in Steps 3 and 4.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your uninstall does not succeed, go to the McAfee Web site (see Resources) and download an uninstaller.
  • Before you uninstall Security Center, you must first uninstall the McAfee components Virus Scan, Personal Firewall, Privacy Service and Spamkiller.
  • Uninstall all components of Security Center before reinstalling. If you leave even one component on, the reinstalled program will not function properly.
  • Beware of accidentally uninstalling aspects of other programs while uninstalling the components of McAfee. This could cause problems with other programs.
