How to Unlock a Cell Phone With IMEI

By Mark Slingo

A majority of mobile phone network providers sell handsets locked to their network. Thus if the user puts a SIM card from another provider in the phone, the phone will not function. It is possible to unlock a cell phone by providing the phone's details to an online provider to obtain an unlock code. There are a number of these services available, covering most of the world's networks.

Step 1

Discover your phone's IMEI number. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a 15-digit number unique to the mobile phone. It can be found on a sticker underneath the phone's battery, or by dialing *#06# into the phone.

Step 2

Open your Internet browser. Navigate to a mobile phone unlocker website. These can be found throughout the various search engines and entering the search term "unlock a phone with IMEI."

Step 3

Designate the brand and model of the phone that you wish to unlock. Specify the country it is used in and the network provider. Enter the IMEI number of the phone. Follow the payment procedure specified by the company. Some companies say they can do this for free, but being that an IMEI code is unique to a phone, most will charge for this service. You will be emailed the unlock code.

Step 4

Insert a new SIM card into your mobile phone. Turn on the phone. When prompted, enter the unlock code to unlock the phone and use it with any network.
