How to Unsubscribe from SMS

By Riz Khan

Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) is a body that strives to establish mobile marketing policies and guidelines that are in line with consumer needs, thus enabling marketers to get the most out of their marketing efforts. MMA requires mobile marketers to offer complete control to customers in deciding which SMS messages they wish to receive. Customers must also be offered a clear and simple way of unsubscribing from any messages that they do not wish to receive. In compliance with MMA guidelines, marketers offer users the option to unsubscribe from SMS using shortcodes "STOP," "QUIT," "CANCEL," "END" and "UNSUBSCRIBE." Any of these messages may be sent in reply to the text message you receive to unsubscribe from a company's messaging list.

Step 1

Open an SMS sent by the company that you wish to unsubscribe from.

Step 2

Scroll down to the bottom of the text message and see if the message ends with info about the unsubscription code and a phone number to which the unsubscription message is to be sent. Keep in mind that it may not be a complete phone number, but rather a combination of four or five digits.

Step 3

Compose a new text message, type the unsubscription code and send the message at the given phone number. If you do not find the unsubscription code and the phone number at the end of the SMS you wish to unsubscribe from, see Step 4.

Step 4

Press the "Options" key and select "Reply" option. Type "UNSUBSCRIBE" in the body of the message and press the "Send" key to deliver your message. You will receive a confirmation message notifying you of the unsubscription from this company's messaging list.
