How to Update a Sony Blu-ray Player

By Nick Miles

Blu-ray players allow you to watch your favorite movies in 1080p high definition in the comfort of your own living room. Like many electronics, they are sometimes built and shipped before all the bugs have been worked out. Fortunately, unlike DVD players, they can be updated to fix bugs and add new features to stay technologically current. Sony, the leader of the Blu-ray movement, periodically releases firmware updates for its Blu-ray players.

Step 1

Go to Click “Electronics” in the menu bar, then “TV & Home Entertainment,” “Blu-ray Disc Products,” and finally “Support & Drivers.”

Step 2

Input the model number of your Blu-ray player to take you to the product page. The model number can be found on the back of the player or in the manual.

Step 3

Download the most recent firmware update.

Step 4

Burn the firmware update to a CD. Be sure to use the “Burn Image” option in your burning software and finalize the disc for it to work properly.

Step 5

Insert the CD into your Blu-ray player and the player will automatically update the firmware.

Tips & Warnings

  • The updating process may take 30 minutes or more.
  • If you do not have the ability to burn CDs, you can order a free update disc from Sony.
  • Do not turn off the power to your Blu-ray player while it is updating, as it may cause permanent damage.
