How to Update an iPhone

By Jason Artman

The Apple iPhone is under constant development, and software updates are released for the phone on a regular basis. These updates may bring new features or applications, and often result in performance improvements for the device. Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, check for software updates, and install them.

Things You'll Need

  • Apple iPhone

Step 1

Charge the iPhone's battery fully.

Step 2

Charge your laptop's battery fully, if you are using one, and connect it to a wall outlet. If the battery for your laptop or iPhone dies during the software update, it could render the iPhone inoperable. If you are using a desktop computer, skip this step.

Step 3

Launch iTunes. Wait for a moment to see if a window appears asking if you would like to update iTunes. If an alert comes up informing you that an update for iTunes is available, click "Yes" to install it. Restart iTunes after the update is complete.

Step 4

Connect the iPhone to your computer, and wait for it to be detected by iTunes.

Step 5

Click the icon representing the iPhone on the left side of the screen.

Step 6

Click the "Update" button in the main portion of the window, under the large iPhone picture. If an update is available, a window will appear asking you to download it.

Step 7

Read the window to see what fixes and new features are available in the iPhone software update, then click "Next" to proceed with the installation. Your iPhone will be updated with the most recent software.
