How to Use an iPhone With Any Carrier

By Emma Nichols

The iPhone is a popular smartphone by Apple. It has the ability to play music, surf the Internet, take photos and videos and use applications from The App Store, in addition to standard calling and texting. It is only available on the AT&T network. Many customers who are dissatisfied with AT&T's expensive plans and service want to use their iPhone with a different carrier, but think they can't. However, you can have a jailbroken iPhone, where the operating software is unlocked to allow third-party applications, to change your carrier.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone
  • SIM card
  • Paper clip

Step 1

Activate the SIM card for the carrier of your choice. You can purchase a SIM card in any carrier's branch or online and activate it online or over the phone. Be sure to select a smartphone plan when activating.

Step 2

Insert the tip of a paper clip in the tiny hole on the SIM tray; it will pop out. The SIM tray is located on the top of the original, 3G and 3GS iPhones and on the right side of the iPhone 4.

Step 3

Replace the SIM card in the tray with the newly activated one. Pop it back in.

Step 4

Turn the iPhone on. You should have full access to the network that you chose on the iPhone.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can either purchase an iPhone already jailbroken or jailbreak an iPhone yourself using a jailbreaking software (see Resources).
