How to Use HDMI on a Laptop

By Amanda C. Kooser

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is becoming the connection of choice for high quality digital audio and video. HDTVs come equipped with HDMI connectors and now more and more laptops are getting in on the action. You may be wondering what to do with the HDMI port on your laptop. There are several useful applications for this technology.

Things You'll Need

  • Laptop
  • HDMI cable
  • HDTV
  • LCD monitor with HDMI connector
  • Projector

Step 1

Connect the HDMI cable from the laptop to the HDMI input on an HDTV. This allows you to use the HDTV as a large external monitor. This is handy for watching digital video, gaming or sharing photos with friends and family.

Step 2

Run the HDMI cable from the laptop to the input on the LCD monitor. This is similar to using an HDTV, but involves an external display that is designed for computer use. When shopping, be sure to check that the monitor has an HDMI input.

Step 3

Hook up a projector by attaching the HDMI cable between the laptop and projector. This is useful for road warriors that need to give presentations or home users that want a large projection experience for video viewing or gaming.

Tips & Warnings

  • HDMI to DVI adapters are available to connect laptops with HDMI to external DVI monitors.
  • Some laptops can only send out video through their HDMI ports. If this is the case, you will need to run a speaker cable from the audio out port on the laptop in order to get sound.
