How to Use Headphones With an iPhone

By Joshua Duvauchelle

Apple's iPhone smartphone device has a built-in port that allows you to connect any type of standard headphones to the phone. Using headphones is ideal when you're in a noisy environment or want to listen to the iPhone's media in private. Some headphones even have a microphone that can be used with the iPhone's phone application.

Things You'll Need

  • Headphones with a 3.5mm jack

Step 1

Turn on the iPhone if it's currently off. Press and hold its sleep/wake button, located on the top right edge of the device, until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Step 2

Plug any headphones set with a standard 3.5mm jack into the headphones port on the top left edge of the iPhone.

Step 3

Press the home button the iPhone's front to activate its touch screen. Drag your finger from left-to-right to unlock it. Press a media player, such as "iPod" or "YouTube," to begin playing media through the connected headphones.

Step 4

Adjust the iPhone's volume if the resulting sound in the headphones is too loud or too quiet. Locate the volume controls on the left edge of the phone. Press the top button to increase the volume in the headphones or press the bottom button to lower the volume.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some of Apple's official iPhone headphones include a built-in microphone on the headphone cord. When the headphones are plugged into the iPhone, you can answer or make a telephone call and speak directly into the microphone on the headphones instead of putting the iPhone to your face. The built-in microphone on the headphones is automatically activated when you start using the iPhone's phone app.
