How to Use In-Ear Earphones

By Elizabeth Martin

Most headphones are easy to travel with, but in-ear earphones provide the ultimate in portability. In-ear earphones allow you to listen to high-quality audio while isolating outside noise. To take advantage of all the benefits that in-ear earphones have to offer, you must know how to use them. How you wear your earphones could mean the difference between passive listening and enjoying high-quality sound.

Things You'll Need

  • Antiseptic

Use

Step 1

Choose the correct ear tip size to ensure a proper fit. In-ear earphones usually come with more than one set of silicon tips. The best fit creates a seal between your ear and the earpiece that helps limit the amount of outside noise you are able to hear. The less outside noise, the better the fit. The correct size varies from person to person. Experiment with different tips to find the best fit for you.

Step 2

Distinguish the left earpiece from the right earpiece. The left will be marked "L" and the right will be marked "R." These are known as channels and have an impact on your listening experience. Most recordings are made with the channels in mind. Although both channels often produce sound at the same time, certain sounds may come from the left while others come from the right. Knowing the left channel from the right channel ensures that you hear the stereo recording as it was intended to be heard.

Step 3

Pull upward on your left ear with your right hand, and push the left ear channel into the ear canal with your left hand. It helps to relax your jaw while using this insertion method. If done properly, your earpiece should fit snugly. Reverse and repeat this step for the opposite ear.

Cleaning and Storage

Step 1

Clean your in-ear earphones regularly. Detach the silicon tips, and allow them to soak in an antiseptic mix of your choice. After soaking, pat them dry with a soft cloth to remove any dust or buildup that may have occurred during use.

Step 2

Wrap and bind your earphones. When not in use, your earphones should be loosely wrapped and bound together. Inside the cord are very small and fragile wires. If tangled, these wires can become frayed over time. Taking care of your earphones will extend their life.

Step 3

Store your in-ear earphones properly, keeping them away from direct sunlight to help prevent magnet damage.
