How to View a DAT File

By Diana Braun

The DAT file extension is used by a variety of programs to store data. Due to different programs using DAT files in various ways, a DAT file is often dependent on the application that created it. With an advanced text editor like EditPlus, you can easily view DAT files no matter what application created it. EditPlus is available for a free trial period of 30 days, after which you must purchase a license if you wish to continue using it (July 2009 price for a one-user license: $35).

Things You'll Need

  • EditPlus

Step 1

Download and install EditPlus software (see Resources).

Step 2

Click "File" and then "Open" to open your DAT file. The contents of your file will be displayed in the right pane of the window.

Step 3

Click "File" and "Exit" to close the DAT file after viewing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some DAT files contain important configuration settings and parameters. Be careful to not make any changes to the file when viewing if you are not familiar with the file type.
