How to View Direct Messages on Twitter

By Elizabeth Otto

Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to chat and network with each other by posting 140 character updates and messages. These posts can be public, which allows a user’s network of followers to view it, or private. Private messages, or direct messages, are sent to a specific person and can only be viewed by the recipient. If you have a Twitter account, you are able to receive direct messages from others who want to communicate privately with you.

Step 1

Log in to your Twitter account by entering your username and password into the "Sign In" box on the Twitter homepage.

Step 2

View the menu on the right-hand side of your Twitter page that displays your Twitter name on the top and provides options beneath your name.

Step 3

Choose "Direct Messages" by clicking on the link. View your direct messages once you have clicked on this option.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your Direct Messages link will be empty if no one has sent you a private message.
  • You may also view any direct messages you have sent to others by clicking your Direct Messages link and choosing "Sent." This will display all messages you have sent privately.
