How to View My Web Cam Over the Internet

By Neal Litherland

Webcams are useful little devices, allowing you to be seen by people you're chatting with, or even for remote business meetings. However, your webcam can also be seen from external sites over the Internet, turning it into a cheap security camera if you want to set it up so that you can watch your apartment or a room in your house. All you need is the proper software and you're ready to go.

Things You'll Need

  • Webcam
  • Webcam broadcasting software

Step 1

Find software that allows you to stream your webcam over the Internet so that it can be seen in real time from a remote location. Eye Spy FX is a simple, easy-to-use program, but an alternative is Webcam XP, which will achieve the same results. Download and install the program that you want to use.

Step 2

Open up the webcam streaming program you chose to download. The program will turn on your webcam and show you the main screen with all of the options displayed. Review the options, and then click "Stream" or "Broadcast." This will take your webcam and start it streaming to another location on the Internet.

Step 3

Access the site on the Internet. Each program will stream your webcam to another website where you can log on and then view the stream from your home. For Eye Spy FX you need to go to the homepage, log in and then view your cam stream that you already started, for instance. You could view the stream from your Internet-capable phone, another computer or anywhere you can access the Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always check to be sure that the program you're downloading is compatible with your computer and that the features are what you're looking for. Webcam XP is only usable for Windows, for instance, and while it has the ability to turn your webcam, that won't do you any good if the cam has no swivel.
