How to View Skype Messages

By Morgan O'Connor

If someone tries to message you on Skype while you are not logged on, you will receive the message the next time that you and that person are logged on simultaneously. If you are chatting with more than one person on Skype, you will only automatically see the messages from the contact you most recently viewed. In either of these cases, you will need to go through several steps to view Skype messages from other contacts.

Step 1

Click on the "Conversations" tab on the left part of your Skype window. If you have new messages that you have not yet viewed, this tab will be orange with a white oval. The oval notes the number of contacts who have sent you messages that you have not yet viewed, not the total number of new messages from these contacts.

Step 2

Look at the list of contacts that appears. Any contact from whom you have a new message will have an orange dot to the right of his name.

Step 3

Click on the name of any contact with an orange dot. This will open your correspondence with this person on the right half of the Skype window. The dot will contain a number that informs you of how many unread messages you have from this specific contact.

Step 4

Read the new message or messages from this contact. If your contact sent you a message several days ago but it just appeared because this is the first time both of you have been logged on since then, the message may not automatically appear. In this case, find the line that says "Show messages from:" and then lists time periods. Click on any of these time periods, such as "Yesterday," "7 days" or "30 days" to show all messages from this contact during the specified time frame.
