How to View Your Browsing History

By Andrew Smith

Web browsing software programs keep track of every website you visit each time you use that browser. This information can come in handy if you plan to re-visit certain websites in the future. Viewing the history in a Web browser can also allow you to monitor which websites your children visit while using the Internet. The instructions for viewing browsing history in Internet Explorer and Firefox are different based upon which program you use while surfing the Internet.

Firefox

Step 1

Open Firefox.

Step 2

Click the "History" option at the top of the browser.

Step 3

Select "Show All History." A "Library" window opens.

Step 4

Double-click the icon for the time period you wish to view. For example, to view the browsing history from the past month, select "This Month."

Step 5

Scroll down the list of websites in the middle of the Library window to view the history for the time period you chose in the previous step.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Click "View" at the top of the Internet Explorer browser.

Step 3

Select "Explorer Bars," and a few more options appear.

Step 4

Choose "History." A small history window opens in the left column of the Internet Explorer window.

Step 5

Click on the drop box located underneath the "History" tab in the left column. Then view website history by category such as "Date" or "Most Visited." Once a category is chosen, the history is listed beneath the drop box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that browsing history can be manually deleted. You will only be able to view the browsing history from the last time the history was deleted, if it ever was.
