How to View Your Webcam Remotely

One way that you can keep an eye on what's going on at your home while you're away, is by using your web camera. People often use web cameras primarily to participate in live video conversations, but with the right software, you can also use them to keep an eye on your room while you're absent.

Things You'll Need

  • Web cam
  • Cam monitor software

Step 1

Visit a website that has web cam monitor software available. An example is the website Deskshare, that has the program Webcam Monitor.

Step 2

Download the program onto your computer by clicking on the download link

Step 3

Install the program on your computer by opening the installation file. It should be on your desktop or in your downloads folder. You'll be able to choose the directory where your program will go during the installation.

Step 4

Begin the program by opening the shortcut on your desktop. Click to try the trial version.

Step 5

Click on the "Start Monitoring" button. As long as your web cam is plugged in and open, the software should automatically recognize it and begin showing the preview of what it's monitoring on screen.

Step 6

Click on "Tools" in the menu bar and select "Start Broadcasting." The log window at the bottom of the program will show you the web address where you can view the broadcast.

  • The trial version of web cam monitoring software will often have a cap on how long you can use it before you have to purchase the product.
