How to Watch Movies Instantly on a Blu-ray Player with Netflix

By Nathaniel Williams

Since it was introduced in 1997, Netflix has radically changed the home-video industry. Its mail-sharing DVD service attracted millions of subscribers, and when it began to offer unlimited online streaming of thousands of movie and television titles in 2008, many eschewed physical media entirely in favor of viewing films on their computers. Today, you can stream Netflix content directly to your Blu-ray player and home theater.

Things You'll Need

  • Netflix-ready Blu-ray player
  • Netflix account
  • Computer
  • High-speed Internet connection
  • Television

Step 1

Verify that your Blu-ray player is compatible with Netflix. Netflix-ready models include certain Blu-ray players from LG, Panasonic, Phillips, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony.

Step 2

Connect your Blu-ray player to your high-speed Internet. For many, this will be with an Ethernet cable; others may be able to connect a Blu-ray player to a Wi-Fi network.

Step 3

Turn on your Blu-ray player and connect to Netflix. With most players, this involves selecting Netflix in the Blu-ray player's menu.

Step 4

Choose "Activate" in the Netflix menu. You should see an alpha-numeric code.

Step 5

Log into Netflix on your computer. Click "Your Account & Help" in the upper right corner. Under "Watching Instantly on Your TV or Computer," select "Activate a Netflix ready device." Enter the code.

Step 6

Add instant movies and TV programs to your queue on the Netflix website on your computer. You will only be able to access movies that are in this queue with your Blu-ray player.

Step 7

Return to your Blu-ray player. After a few minutes, you should see titles from your instant queue on your player's Netflix menu. Select a title.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Netflix accounts set limits on the number of devices to which you may stream movies. Check your account if you are having problems adding multiple devices.
