How to Win a Bid on eBay

By Techwalla Internet Editor

Do you enjoy shopping on eBay? Are you frustrated because your bids continue to be beaten? Of course everyone knows that winning an auction is never guaranteed, although there are ways to improve your chances of winning the auctions that interest you. Follow the steps below to make sure you win a bid on eBay:

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step 1

Log on to your computer. Visit and sign in using your username and password.

Step 2

Place the item you wish to buy on your "Watch" page. You will find this option on an item's description page. "Watch this item" will appear underlined, and in blue lettering toward the top of the screen.

Step 3

Place a high bid on the item. eBay will increase the bid up to your maximum bid in increments until that bid is beaten. You may also use a "Buy It Now" option to end the auction immediately. If this option is available, it will be found next to the "Place Bid" box on the item's description page.

Step 4

Check your Watch page frequently to see if your bid has been beaten. You can find this feature by clicking "My eBay" at the top of the home page.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can wait until an auction has only a few seconds left to 'snipe' a bid at the last moment.
  • Always pay for your item in a timely fashion to build a positive user rating.
  • Never bid an amount that you are unwilling to pay, as you are responsible for any auction that you win.
