How to Write Basic Computer Programs for a PC

Writing simple computer programs can help you increase your workflow while providing a good introduction into the complex and powerful world of computer science. One of the most simple computer programs to write is a batch file (.bat). Batch files can be used to do a variety of things, from opening multiple programs at once to shutting your computer down at a certain time. Soon, you will be writing countless programs to meet your specific needs.

Step 1

Open up a text editor of your choice.

Step 2

Type "start calc.exe" (without the quotations).

Step 3

Click File>Save As...> and type a file name of your choice followed by the file extension ".bat". For example, you could type "calculator.bat". Close the file.

Step 4

Open up your new batch program. Calculator should open up.

Step 5

Continue to experiment with different commands to create new programs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research the different batch commands as well as Microsoft's websites for good information on batch programming.
  • Ensure that your know what your program will do before running it to avoid any undesirable effects.
