My Computer Won't Automatically Recognize My Camera

By J. Johnson

If you want to be able to upload pictures from your digital camera online or email them to friends and family, you first need to save them on your computer. To save the pictures from your camera onto your computer, you'll need to connect the camera to the computer. Your computer will then need to recognize the new device. If the computer doesn't automatically recognize your camera once you connect it, you'll need to do some troubleshooting.

Step 1

Turn on your digital camera before you connect it to your computer.

Step 2

Connect the camera to the USB port of your computer using the cord that was provided with your camera.

Step 3

Turn your camera off. Wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. This might help the computer recognize it.

Step 4

Set your digital camera to image viewing mode. This is the option on your camera that allows you to look through the pictures you've already taken. This might also help your computer recognize the camera.

Step 5

Make sure the camera and the cord connecting to your computer are working properly by connecting the camera to a different computer if possible. Make sure the USB port on your computer is working properly by connecting another device to it, such as your printer.
