Unable to Connect to Rhapsody

By Mike Benson

There are some common reasons why Rhapsody may fail to connect. The program needs exclusive access to the core of your operating system and thus needs to run with administrative privileges. Additionally, Rhapsody relies on your Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer settings to create a connection. Troubleshooting a connection problem begins with resetting Internet Explorer settings and allowing Rhapsody an exception in your firewall. Troubleshooting ends with launching the program using administrative credentials.

Reset Internet Explorer

Step 1

Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously on your keyboard. This opens a "Run" box on the bottom of your screen.

Step 2

Type "Inetcpl.cpl" in the "Run" box and click the "OK" button. This opens an "Internet Properties" dialog window.

Step 3

Click the "Advanced" tab. Click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the window.

Step 4

Click the "Reset" button on the "Are you sure?" screen. Windows automatically resets the connection and security settings back to their defaults.

Allow Exception in Firewall

Step 1

Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously. Type "Firewall.cpl" in the "Run" box and click the "OK" button. This opens the Windows Firewall component.

Step 2

Click the "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall" link on the left pane. This opens a new window containing the current list of program exceptions in alphabetical order.

Step 3

Click the "Change Settings" button at the top, and then click the "Allow another program" button at the bottom of the screen. This opens a small window on your screen that allows you to browse for a program to allow. This list is also categorized alphabetically.

Step 4

Double-click "Rhapsody" to add it to the exceptions list. Click the "OK" button at the bottom and then close the Windows Firewall settings.

Run Program as Administrator

Step 1

Click Start, and type "Rhapsody" in the "Start Search" box.

Step 2

Right-click the "Rhapsody" icon in the search results list. Click "Properties" from the right-click menu.

Step 3

Click the "Compatibility" tab, and then click the check box next to "Run this program as an administrator."

Step 4

Press the "Apply" button to save the changes.

Step 5

Restart your computer to ensure all changes take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disable any third-party security applications if the issue still persists. See the Resources section for a list of security programs that are reported as being incompatible with the Rhapsody service.
