What Is Dish On Demand?

By Tommy Charles

Dish Network's Dish On Demand service allows you the flexibility to watch nearly any movie you want when you want and from your own home. This pay-to-view service features low-cost movies at high quality. However, not all Dish Network receivers are capable of using this service, and the service requires Internet access.

Dish On Demand

With Disk Network's Dish On Demand service, you can peruse a list of movies, purchase one and then view it instantly. Prices typically range from $1 to $4.99. You can watch the purchased movie as many times as you like within 24 hours after purchase. You can usually use DVR functions with Dish On Demand, including pause, rewind and fast forward. Typically, you will find new movies available every week on the Dish On Demand service.

Supported Receivers

You can only use the Dish On Demand service with certain Dish Network receivers. This is because older receivers may not have the required technology built in to stream movies from the receiver to the TV as well as provide DVR functionality. Supported receivers include the 922, 625, 622, 612, 512, 522 and the 722 models. You should be able to find the Disk Network receiver model number printed somewhere on the front face of the device.

Quality

Dish On Demand offers movies in resolutions up to 1080p. The 1080p is a very high resolution, but you must have a TV capable of reproducing this level of detail for this feature to work. In fact, 1080p resolution is roughly equal to the quality that you can find on any Blu-ray disk. Dish On Demand is also capable of streaming some movies in 3D if you have a TV that can take advantage of this. When you attempt to view movies in 1080p or 3D, your receiver will conduct a test of your hardware and let you know if it is compatible.

How to Order

Before you can use Dish On Demand, you must connect your receiver to your broadband connection or phone line. Simply plug an Ethernet cable into the receiver's Ethernet port. Then, with your Dish Network remote, tune to Channel 1. Use the arrow keys on your remote control to select the movie that you would like to watch. You can watch the movie's trailer by highlighting the "Watch Trailer" button on-screen and pressing "Select." When you find a movie that you want to watch, highlight it and press "Select." You will then be prompted to confirm that you would like to purchase the movie.
