How to Change the Region Code on DVD Players
Submitted by Alexis Lawrence
In The Beginning
The majority of DVD players contain region coding, which allows the units to play only DVDs manufactured in that region. DVD players manufactured in the United States or Canada, for example, play only DVDs manufactured in those countries. Typically, you can't change the region code on a DVD player, but you can unlock many DVD players to make them region-free. Once your DVD player is region-free, the unit can play discs from any region.
The Main Steps
Go to a website that lists the region unlock codes for DVD players. DVD Demystifiziert, DVD Exploder and Video Help provide DVD player region unlock code listings (see Resources).
Find the region unlock code for your DVD player. Unlock codes are specific to each make and model of player, so, to find the region unlock code for your player, click on the brand of your player, such as Sony or Philips, and then click on the model number of your player. If you do not know the model number of your DVD player, look at the front of the player, where the model number usually displays.
Use the buttons on the DVD player and the DVD player remote to enter the region unlock code for your DVD player. The steps to unlock the region on a DVD player may involve pressing a series of buttons on the remote or a combination of buttons on the remote and the player.
Turn off the DVD player after entering the region unlock code. When you turn on the unit, the DVD player should be region-free, and any DVD you place into the DVD tray should play.
