Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The Amazon Echo Dot delivers the full functionality of the Alexa virtual voice assistant at half the price of the original Echo.
  • You can beef up the Echo Dot's weak audio by connecting it to Bluetooth or wired speakers.
  • The Echo Dot's hockey puck profile makes it much easier to place than its taller predecessor.

CONS

  • The Echo Dot's small speakers aren't suitable for music playback.
  • The Echo Dot ships in summer 2016; only a Prime member can order it, and you can only do so via a voice-enabled Amazon device.
  • You can't synchronize the Dot with other Alexa devices, so a command overheard by two of them might produce a cacophonous response.
Don't want to spend $180 for an Amazon Echo voice-controlled virtual assistant? The Echo Dot delivers the Echo's Alexa smarts and sensitive microphones in a much smaller package--think tuna fish can--at half the price. The main difference: The Echo Dot has much less powerful speakers, but you can remedy that by connecting it via Bluetooth or cable to speakers of your own. While Amazon provided evaluation units to reviewers, the Echo Dot hasn't yet shipped and is scheduled to do so this summer. You have to be an Amazon Prime member with a voice-enabled Amazon product to order a Dot. You can't order it on Amazon's website, but you can order by voice on the Amazon shopping app on your mobile device.

Amazon promised all of Alexa at half the price, and that’s exactly what the Dot is. Practically speaking, we think it makes good sense.

It doesn't sound nearly as good as its bigger sibling, the Echo, or even the portable Amazon Tap for that matter, but the Echo Dot has an interesting trick up its sleeve: It can connect to your existing sound system via 3.5mm cable or Bluetooth. That makes the Dot a great option if you're looking to add Alexa to your favorite speaker.

Interacting with the Echo Dot is a lot easier than I had imagined it would be. It’s amazing how “human” the conversation feels.
