PROS

  • The 8.9-inch HD display on the Fire HDX is ideal for streaming videos with your Prime membership or through Fire apps like HBO Go and Netflix.
  • Sound from the stereo speakers is great and gets loud. If you prefer headphones, you'll enjoy the exclusive Dolby Atmos sound enhancement.
  • Parental controls on the Fire HDX 8.9 are excellent with support profiles for up to four kids with daily usage limits.

CONS

  • Amazon's app store is still third-string compared to Android's and Apple's. The curated app selection is much smaller.
  • The 16GB Fire HDX 8.9 has only 9.9GB of user-accessible space and no microSD card slot to increase the limited storage.
  • The placement of the power and volume buttons in the rear of the Fire HDX 8.9 takes some getting used to.
The 2014 version of Amazon's best Fire tablet has an 8.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. It uses a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and comes in 16, 32, and 64GB storage options. An 8 MP camera adorns the back and an HD camera is located in the front. A dual-band AC Wi-Fi card provides wireless access to the Fire HDX 8.9 and a 4G option is available. In a first for tablets, Dolby’s Atmos sound technology is integrated into the 2014 version of the Fire HDX 8.9.

As with the 7-inch Fire HDX, the tablet's back plate has a distinctive design, with a soft-touch black finish that we found suitably easy to grasp. It didn't attract dust and dirt, as such surfaces sometimes do.
