PROS

  • The iPad Pro 9.7 offers a host of improvements over the iPad Air 2, including a faster processor, better cameras, more speakers, and an anti-reflective screen.
  • The new Smart Connector allows for easy connection of accessories such as the Smart Keyboard.
  • All the new features come without any added weight or bulk; it's as slim and light as the iPad Air 2.

CONS

  • Apple doesn't include a keyboard, and the optional (and expensive) Smart Keyboard feels cramped.
  • The iPad Pro 9.7 comes with half the RAM of the larger iPad Pro and a slightly slower processor, yet it commands a higher price than the iPad Air 2.
  • IOS has limitations that make it a tough sell for anyone considering the iPad Pro 9.7 as a laptop replacement.
Successor to the iPad Air 2, the iPad Pro 9.7 delivers many of the best features of Apple's larger tablet to the more familiar 9.7-inch form factor. As with the previous Pro, Apple hopes buyers look upon this as not just a tablet, but also a potential laptop replacement. Although, there are likely to be some work tasks you can't perform with iOS, the support for Apple Pencil means artists and note-takers can scribble on the go.

The Apple Pencil is the tablet stylus that puts other styli to shame. It's accuracy, sensitivity, pressure-sensing and angle detection are almost unmatched. It makes for a very natural drawing experience and the only comparable competition are the Surface Pro 4 stylus and Wacom graphics tablets for laptops and desktop PCs.

I've been an outspoken fan of the Air 2's design since it came out, but using the super-snappy Pro ruined that older tablet for me. Now nearly all that power is available in a more manageable size, albeit one that feels less like a full-blown PC replacement.

The keyboard is simply a scaled down version of the larger iPad Pro’s, and the smaller (very small) keys make it fiddly to touch type on, at least until you get used to the narrower key spacing. Autocorrect does a decent job of fixing the inevitable mistakes, but there’s no doubt that the larger iPad Pro is a better choice if you do need to type long documents.

The iPad Pro's display is fantastic, too. True, it's the same resolution as the older iPad Air 2, but it's gotten markedly better glare reduction, brightness boost and Apple's weird-but-strangely-good-for-reading TrueTone automatic color adjustment.

I can now listen to amped up music through its four loud stereo speakers, doodle away with the Apple Pencil and seamlessly attach a keyboard without fumbling with Bluetooth. Its Smart Connector port may be my favorite new feature inherited from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

My favorite thing about the new iPad Pro is the screen. Apple says it’s less reflective than the iPad Air 2 — 40 percent less, to be precise. But while I couldn’t really see that, I could see the True Tone color technology.

Unfortunately, the iPad doesn’t have an adjustable kickstand like the Microsoft Surface’s. You can prop the iPad at any angle, as long as it’s 55 degrees. The iPad’s keyboard cover is rigid enough to use on your lap. It’s not the Rock of Gibraltar, but you won’t complain unless you have restless-leg syndrome.

The 12.9-inch Pro’s speakers are better by virtue of being larger, and a decent Bluetooth speaker is still probably a better way to play music for an impromptu party, but the 9.7-inch iPad Pro’s speakers make it a respectable portable jukebox and a better mobile Netflix machine.

With the word Pro in its name, the device better be fast; luckily, performance in not an issue. Consider this the Usain Bolt of tablets. Equipped with the same A9X chip as the larger iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch model is a beast, capable of editing, consuming, and browsing without breaking a sweat.

On the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, like the iPhones 6s and SE, the M9 also allows for "Hey Siri!" unplugged — that's full, hands–free, voice control. While it may seem like more of an iPhone feature, being able to use it with an iPad in the kitchen, for example, is aces.
