VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • Apple finally figured out how to make the iPhone lineup water resistant.
  • Battery life is more than enough to get through a single day of use.
  • Easily the best camera Apple has ever used in an iPhone. The 2x optical zoom combined with 10x digital zoom has great potential.

CONS

  • Lack of the tried and true headphone jack is probably going to drive you nuts.
  • Fancy camera features that take advantage of the second lens won't be available until later this year.
  • Overall design is tired, lacking dramatic changes in the past three years.
The iPhone 7 Plus looks nearly identical to the iPhone 6S Plus before it, but don't let it fool you. Coming in gold, rose gold, silver, black, and jet black, the iPhone 7 Plus has more than a couple of new colors up its sleeve. It's equipped with two rear-facing cameras, one 12-megapixel standard camera and a second 56 mm telephoto lens. The front-facing camera is now 7 megapixels, and yes, the headphone jack has vanished. With a new water-resistant housing, you shouldn't get too stressed if the phone takes an accidental dip in the pool.

If you can get over the all-too-familiar design and the no-headphone-jack thing, then the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are serious contenders for best smartphones, period. Note that I used the word "best," not "most innovative" -- neither of these devices is groundbreaking.

I've bounced back and forth between the 4.7-inch iPhone and the 5.5-inch version over the past few years. I used to hate the idea of the Plus. Then I preferred it. Then I shifted back to the smaller iPhone and used a battery case. The smaller one feels better to hold. The larger one has the superior display, but feels awkward in my hand.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are legitimately among the most interesting, opinionated, powerful phones Apple has ever shipped, and the most confident expressions of the company’s vision in a long time. iOS 10 is excellent, the cameras are better, and the performance is phenomenal. And the batteries last longer. These are terrific phones.

The iPhone 7 Plus has such a great camera that it’s easy to recommend it over the iPhone 7, and the extra dash of battery life is nice to have too. While it isn’t without its drawbacks, it’s got power, speed, and a shiny new coat.

The 2x magnification proved more useful than I was expecting, but the digital zoom is still not worth using, particularly at its extremes – it’s simply artificially spreading the pixels out without adding new information, and the resulting photos look awful.

This is probably the biggest improvement in iPhone photography since the first iPhone and I’m excited to always have it in my pocket.

The iPhone 7 Plus battery lasts more than a whole day, with light use, and unlike the iPhone 7 doesn't drain as fast when using social networking or chat apps. A full day with plenty of messages will see you still with a good 30 per cent battery for the last train home.
