VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • Battery life on the iPhone SE outlasts the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.
  • This phone is fast; performance is impressive thanks to the faster processor powering a smaller screen.
  • For less than $500 you can buy a modern, fully capable iPhone.

CONS

  • The entry model comes with a lowly 16GB of storage, which isn't going to be enough room for most users.
  • The display is outdated. It doesn't look horrible, but when it is placed next to an iPhone 6S, you can tell the difference.
  • Apple opted not to update the overall design of a phone it originally released in 2013.
Apple's latest iPhone looks exactly like the iPhone 5S on the outside, but the inside is completely redone. The iPhone SE sports at 12-megapixel camera, 4K video capturing, and Apple's Live Photo feature. Inside is Apple's latest A9 processor, the M9 coprocessor for tracking movement, and an NFC chip to add Apple Pay support on the budget friendly phone. The base model comes with 16GB of storage, but for $100 more you get 64GB. For those wondering, the "SE" stands for "Special Edition."

That said, the display might take a little getting used to if you're coming from a 6s. The screen's a tad less bright than that of either the 6s or 6s Plus, and the color temperature is a little warmer, too.

At first glance, the price looks like a steal -- but I wouldn't ever get a 16GB model ($399, £359, AU$679). You need 64. Which sucks, because that means you're spending an extra $100, £80 or AU$150. That's only a "budget" phone by Apple standards.

Thanks to the faster and more powerful processor, the iPhone SE never showed signs of slowing down. I’d even say the iPhone SE felt faster than the iPhone 6S I normally carry on a daily basis. Even when playing graphics-intensive games such as Asphalt 8, I never felt like the iPhone SE was underpowered.
