When sub-$200 Chromebooks began selling like bottled water at a desert fiesta, Windows laptop makers responded with their own economy portables, like the Asus EeeBook X205TA. This fanless notebook is built around a 1.33 GHz Intel Atom quad core processor. With an 11.6-inch display and Intel HD graphics, the Windows 8.1 unit is lightweight at 2.16 pounds and compact at 11.2 by 7.6 by 0.6 inches. The unit has a generously sized trackpad, chicklet keyboard and strong battery life in the 12 to 14 hour range. This Asus notebook has 2GB of RAM and a 32GB solid-state drive.
