PROS

  • The smart clothing offers actionable insights into working your muscles.
  • You get instant feedback from your smartphone.
  • The garments look cool and are durable.

CONS

  • A core plus one garment costs about $350.
  • You need some prior knowledge to interpret the data.
  • Muscle work is shown by color, which can be subjective.
Athos smart garments use electromyography, a technology formerly only available to top athletes, to measure muscle effort while you work out. The garments, currently a shirt and pair of shorts, contain biosensors and heart rate sensors that relay information to the Athos core, a small device that docks with each garment, gathers the information from the sensors, and relays it to your smartphone. With the data, which is available immediately, you can see whether you are using the correct muscles and whether both sides of your body are in balance. The Athos core comes with a recharging cradle and a USB cable. It currently works only with iOS devices.
