PROS

  • The HT1085ST provides good image quality and displays a sharp, clear picture.
  • The projector's compact size and light weight makes the HT1085ST a good option if you're looking for a projector to take with you.
  • The short-throw lens allows you to place the projector closer to the screen, which comes in handy when you want to use the HT1085ST in a small room.

CONS

  • You may notice a shimmering rainbow effect when viewing content on the HT1085ST. This is a common occurrence with DLP projectors.
  • The lack of lens shift makes it more difficult to get your picture just right.
  • Although this projector supports 3D content, you have to pay an extra $59 for a pair of 3D glasses.
The BenQ HT1085ST is a projector made with small spaces in mind. Its compact 12.3 X 9.6 inch footprint means it can fit on just about any coffee table, and its short-throw lens allows you to place the projector closer to the screen than you would a standard projector. The underlying DLP technology can display up to 1.07 billion colors, and it can handle full 1080p (1920 X 1080) video. The HT1085ST supports 3D content, too.

Spec-wise, the HT1085ST is practically identical to the HT1075, but its short-throw lens suits its for smaller rooms or situations where the projector must be placed closer to the screen. I was able to fill my 100-inch screen with the projector placed at a distance of just five feet away.

In my tests, the HT1085ST delivered good color quality and did a good job with skin tones and shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas). I saw a just hint of judder—the jerkiness in movement that's inherent in movies filmed at 24 frames per second—in one clip with the camera panning across the scene, but not enough to be an issue.

Externally, the HT1085ST is very compact; smaller than the average Blu-ray player in fact. It’s also very light which makes it a breeze to pack into a bag and take with you. While it’s aimed at home use, there’s no reason you couldn’t use it as a presentation projector with your laptop.
