Recommended, but seriously flawed. There are probably better alternatives.

based on the following sites

PROS

  • This shooter delivers color-accurate, well-balanced images.
  • Its lack of features is offset by an attractive, low price.
  • In spite of the basic features, the T5 supports 1080p video capture.

CONS

  • The slow 3 frames-per-second burst mode means this camera is not suited for sports or fast-action shots.
  • High ISO images have mediocre performance.
  • The camera lacks a microphone input, so you can't add stereo audio capture.
The Canon EOS Rebel T5 hits a wallet-friendly price. Canon stripped out the fancy features and followed previous models closely to deliver this capable but entry-level shooter. Other models offer more, but this one covers the basics, with good image quality and a low price.

If you've always longed for a DSLR but could never justify the expense then the T5 / 1200D makes it more affordable than ever. But sharing so many of the specifications of its 2011 predecessor, and so little that's new, it's hard to get excited. Sure, keeping the cost down means missing out on features like wifi, faster continuous shooting, a touch screen, or sophisticated AF.

Image quality is very good, though its high ISO performance lags behind some of its competitors. Keep in mind the T5's entry-level price and its lack of bells and whistles and top-tier performance aren't all that surprising -- but something to keep in mind, though.

Despite a slightly lacklustre specification, the Canon EOS 1200D delivers a superb first-time DSLR experience. For an extraordinarily competitive price you get a lot of solid under-the-bonnet features like superb native ISO performance, a solid metering system and a sensor with a nice fat megapixel count.

At $550, the T5 strikes a good value-versus-power proposition: It has far more versatility and control than a high-end point-and-shoot, yet it’s also compact enough and low-cost enough to not be an albatross around your neck. But while image quality is good, you’ll be giving up some features to get that price.

Whereas new DSLRs usually push the envelope of image-quality quality, the Canon EOS Rebel T5 is designed to bring their price-point down. It manages to squeeze below the price of many mirrorless and even prosumer cameras by offering a minimal feature-set. Still, it remains true to the DSLR gestalt with nice image-quality and a relatively speedy performance.
