PowerShot G16by Canon
PROS
- The 28-140 mm lens provides a versatile, midrange reach, and its wide-open f/1.8 to f/2.8 aperture makes this camera a good choice in low light.
- The comfortable grip makes this camera easy to hold one-handed.
- The G16 has manual controls, a built-in flash, and a hot shoe for an external flash or for mounting an LED light.
CONS
- The Wi-Fi implementation lacks the finesse of newer models.
- While the camera supports shooting at higher ISOs, anything above ISO 800 will show noticeable artifacts.
- The display is fixed, which makes it harder to capture above-head, low-down, and selfie snaps.

The camera delivers image quality that's consistently good, certainly among the best in class. Shoot raw, shoot JPEG, share with Wi-Fi - it's all pro. And when it comes to build and functions you’d be hard-pressed to find any fault.

Compared to other compacts, it's the G16's speed that really marks it out. If you're shooting outdoors during daylight hours, response is almost instant at wide angle settings. There's often no need to depress the shutter halfway to pre-focus. Because you're not constantly having to ask your subjects to "look this way" and "hold that pose" you can work with much more discretion and get far more natural photos as a result.

Image quality also remains excellent, though, with a perfectly usable ISO range of 80-1600 and fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, albeit only at the 28mm wide-angle lens setting, making the G16 very well-suited to low-light, hand-held photography.

Photos are impressive with excellent colour, detail and exposure, with numerous options to expand dynamic range. Video quality is very good with 60fps full HD video recording and 5-axis image stabilisation making even handheld videos very smooth, with quick focusing speeds. Continuous shooting is extremely rapid, shooting at 12fps, and shot to shot times are also good, even when shooting raw.

The easy-to-use dials and refreshingly minimalist menu system are a nice change from other more menu-heavy compact cameras. And the camera's fairly slim design (compared to pre-G15 models) does give it a better, more agile feel than its predecessors.
The G16 has a few minor flaws, but achieves a promising balance between image quality, capability, and functionality for the price.

The G16's 28-140mm 5x optical zoom has a longer reach than the RX100 II with a 140mm telephoto compared with 100mm on the latter. It also has a brighter lens, though both boast an f1.8 maximum aperture at the wide angle setting, the RX100 II closes down to f4.9 when zoomed in compared to a relatively bright f2.8 on the G16. The G16 can also focus closer and has a background defocus stacking mode.

The G16 is a no-nonsense premium compact that builds on the already excellent reputation of the G series. You get great image quality in a reasonably small body that still manages to cram in lots of direct access buttons and dials to make the advanced photographer feel plenty at home.

Its feature set continues to lag comparatively, but overall the camera remains a nice option for manual-control devotees who don't want to schlep around a dSLR and who still find compact interchangeable-lens cameras a bit too large.
I was impressed by its wide-aperture lens, built-in Wi-Fi, 10fps burst shooting, and 1080p60 video.
