W7by Definitive Technology
PROS
- The W7 offers a wealth of powerful and well-placed speakers under its deceptively simple and elegant hood.
- It creates a rich sound that fills most spaces even when cranked up only partway and makes any spot in the room a good one--especially with high-res audio.
- As part of Definitive Technology's Play-Fi wireless platform, the W7 networks with additional speakers -- either from Def Tech or other brands.
CONS
- The app (especially for Android) can be clunky and limiting. It lacks an equalizer, doesn't handle skipping around within tracks well, and could make setting up speaker groups and zones easier.
- The W7 is only compatible with a limited number of streaming services.
- The top is easily scratched and highly susceptible to fingerprints.

What jumped out at me was the detailed bass, rather than a one-note, bouncy exaggerated boing.

If you're looking for decent to good sound quality with an extremely easy to setup and use system, Sonos is far superior to Def Tech. But if your focus is on the highest quality sound, there's no comparison.

In standalone, self-powered speakers, Definitive offers the cube-shaped W7 ($399) and its larger, rectangular brother, the W9 ($699). Definitive went with a reserved yet high-tech, sleek design with these speakers, both featuring a gloss black top and solid aluminum silver base with the company’s typical black-wrapped cloth around the middle. Visually, they are cool and modern.
Pin-point precision in the extended highs makes for a fine listen, especially in lighter recordings, like acoustic tracks and jazz.

Basically, you’ve got an efficient box of speakers with nothing extra or unnecessary. Gotta respect it.

I played several genres of music, including a live recording that is almost unintelligible on most other speakers, and all came through great clarity and sound quality.
