VERDICT
Recommended, but seriously flawed. There are probably better alternatives.

PROS

  • It's rare for a laptop at this price point to be user upgradeable.
  • You should be able to get 6 to 8 hours of use out of this laptop, unplugged.
  • While its non-SSD hard drive is not speedy, it does offer 500GB of storage.

CONS

  • The Inspiron 11 looks better than it feels in hand.
  • There is no on-board Ethernet port so you'll need an adapter to plug into a LAN.
  • The base model's Intel Bay Trail Celeron processor plus SATA hard drive won't win any speed tests.
For the budget-minded who want the convenience of a laptop and tablet in a single device, you probably won't find better in the sub-$500 category than the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 (2014 edition). With its thin metal-like chassis and a tight 360-degree hinge, this convertible laptop can handle everything from word processing to light Photoshopping, but you'll need to be patient. You can even trick out this machine by swapping in additional RAM and or upgrading its SATA hard drive, taking this understated laptop to the next level.

Unfortunately the close placement for the two USB slots makes it tough to plug in and remove an external device unless they are small.

Perhaps he shouldn't have left us to choose the song as Ace of Base came out sounding tinny and distinctly underwhelming. In the interests of fairness we popped on the less bassy "Happy" after he'd slunk off, but we have to say it still sounded average.
