VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The XPS 13's edge-to-edge display is high-resolution, beautiful, and looks like the future.
  • Overall performance is great, thanks to an Intel Core CPU and SSD. Integrated graphics are OK for some less-demanding games.
  • This laptop is unusually lightweight and small for its capabilities.

CONS

  • Dell placed the webcam below the screen, so it looks up toward your face--and potentially up your nose during video chats.
  • The higher-resolution touch screen costs extra and drags down battery life.
  • The XPS 13 has no built-in Ethernet connectivity.
Dell's XPS 13 offers a 13-inch display in the size of a typical 11-inch laptop thanks to an almost bezel-less InfinityEdge display. Unlike many modern convertible devices, this is a traditional laptop--slimmed down and polished. Dell is pushing the boundaries with the XPS 13. This laptop comes with high-end hardware, although it's available in a variety of configurations. Notably, you can purchase Dell's XPS 13 with or without a touch screen.

One of the design sacrifices Dell had to make to keep the XPS 13's bezel so thin was that it moved the webcam to the lower-left corner of the display. Unless the notebook is sitting about 2 feet away, all a Skype caller will see is your chest or straight up your nose.

Battery life was a mixed bag in our testing. Its score of 7 hours 40 minutes on our rundown test is respectable, but somewhat disappointing compared with 8:44 for the Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7 Touch and 9:31 for the previous Dell XPS 13 Touch.

The XPS 13 is nice and responsive thanks to its SSD. The Windows Desktop loads in just a few seconds, and shut-down is just as fast. Equally, programs launch very quickly. Most of the less resource-intensive software out there runs perfectly smoothly.

Dell quotes up to 15 hours of battery life, and I struggled to get even half that in the real world. Though some laptop reviewers may say the XPS 13's is on par with or better than a 13-inch MacBook Air, I tried them both side by side and the Air lasted several hours longer.
